Back home
Got back from the States on Monday, haven't had a chance to post due to attempting to finish off sewing jobs whilst dealing with a teething, jet-lagged baby. We had a great time over there, mostly doing Tudor Tailor talks, however I did manage to work on Michael's new codpiece which is only slightly smaller than the one I just finished for Edmund. Better not let the two of them get into a room together, could be dangerous. Current Mood: drained | | Tuesday, June 5th, 2007 | | 10:23 pm |
Tudor Tailor in the States
Posting from our hotel in a very hot Phoenix, Arizona after a jolly successful presentation of The Tudor Wardrobe. It was our biggest audience to date, and very lovely they were too. We sold out of books and nearly sold out of patterns. On to San Jose tomorrow and then Santa Cruz, Berkeley and Vallejo. We have relly enjoyed it so far and Minnie has been a little star, she even let us sleep until 4am this morning, hoping for 5am tomorrow.... A few of my favourite things...
Today was a good day. Minnie and I went to Waterbabies (baby swimming), she swam througha hoop under the water and was thrown in with a splash. She laughed and smiled a lot. Edmund's lovely buttons arrived from the wonderful Karl Robinson I laundered and starched my ruff in readiness for the Tudor Tailor talk at Oxburgh Hall on Thursday. Then I was interviewed for BBC Radio Norfolk (todays Nicky Price show, 20 mins from the end if anyone is interested and wants to do the 'listen again' thing online) to promote the afore-mentioned talk. Just got got back and put Minnie to bed, Michael is out so I have made myself a Ninya freindly meal of salad with toasted seeds, avocado, cherry tomatoes, hummous and chocolate-balsamic dressing with jam on soda bread for afters, all made so much more delicious by the sight of the newly starched ruff. So there, an insight into my very own unique world. Current Mood: accomplished | | Thursday, May 17th, 2007 | | 7:57 pm |
Jen's pirate coat question
Suzi already gave a good description of how this coat goes together, but I just found these images of it at fitting stage for the Clash of Empires exhibition figure and thought they might help. Current Mood: productive | | Monday, May 14th, 2007 | | 8:05 pm |
Minnie
I think I just upgraded my account to allow posting of images, just testing. Hopefully here is a recent picture of Minnie showing off her two teeth! Current Mood: artistic | | 3:15 pm |
Just been to the docs with my very sore wrist which has got worse rather than better over the last few monthes. I know how I did it, I hauled Minnie around with that hand crooked under her bottom for the first four or five monthes, knowing it was straining my wrist but not able to find a better way of doing it. Anyway now I have tendonitis and the doctor says one of the worst things I can do is use scissors, especially big heavy metal ones. Oh bum. So, I need to find an alternative method for cutting out all those bits of costume that need making. Thoughts so far: Get good with some left handed scissors Use a rotary cutter Let the hamster out of the fridge he apparently resides in making squeaking noises all day and get him to gnaw round the pattern pieces Any other suggestions? Nottingham Lecture
I forgot to put this on the Tudor Tailor website until today - doh! But for anyone who can get to Nottingham on Saturday 19th May, I will be giving a lecture at The University (a version of The Tudor Wardrobe) from 10.30-12.30. Tickets are £4.50 on the door. It will be held at:Nottingham University Centre for Continuing Education, Room A34, The Dearing Building, Jubilee Campus, Wollaton Rd. Everybody welcome! Shame it coincides with the Kentwell Open Day. | | Tuesday, May 1st, 2007 | | 10:24 pm |

Update, second attempt
Minnie is in bed, so I can do my update, except she will know that I am doing this and wake up in three minutes. Since I was last here the following things have occured: • I have moved my studio home to the cellar (as previously mentioned), also known as the dungeon. • I have completed one commission from start to finish at home. It was a wedding dress for a freind that I agreed to do last year. I didn't know what style she would want and was a little unnerved when she showed me the photo of her standing in the most enormous full-skirted, boned, beaded, lace-trimmed concoction and told me that that was what she wanted. The only saving grace was that it was in shot blue/black taffeta rather than white or ivory so cutting out on the kitchen floor wasn't quite so scary. Anyway, nothing can be as challenging as that dress so my new home set up has had a trial by fire. • I have made most of Minnie's first ever 16th century costume and she has worn it to the re-enactor's market. She was mostly co-operative and looked suitably cute. • Minnie has grown, longer, wider, eyelashes, hair, 2 teeth, an infectious laugh, the ability to roll, grab, drop things on purpose and eat sloppy solids. She has also gained the most impressive collection of stripy tights a girl could desire (take note Eva) • Took delivery of my first ever portrait by the super talented Karl Kopinski http://www.karlkopinski.com/image.php?id=145 It was done to match the one he had already done of Michael in his wedding outfit (also on the site). I didn't know if I would like seeing an image of myself but I am pleasantly suprised and like it a lot. I am currently in the process of tying up all of the details for the Tudor Tailor tour of California, now it is nearly all sorted I am starting to look forward to it, though with a certain amount of trepidation on the Minnie, long distance flight, sleep upheaval front. That's it for now, I'm sure there was more but motherhood has eaten my braincell. Current Mood: sleepy | | Saturday, April 21st, 2007 | | 11:28 am |
I'm back!
Hello LJ'ers! I finally have a decent internet connection at home and can join in again - hooray! I moved my studio home, into our newly dry-lined cellar, as the flights of stairs, heavy, noisy fire doors and baby combo just wasn't working. It's a relief to be set up all in one place, but it's taken this long to get the broadband thing sorted. I was going to post a lovely fulsome update, but Minnie has just woken up, so see you all later! Learning stuff
Just been to an induction evening for new tutors at The University of Nottingham where I will be teaching a course next year, it was meant to start in October but a certain new little human meant that it had to be postponed. So now I really have to get my brain in gear on this again - daunting but exciting. If anyone fancies it the course starts on the 29th January for 10 weeks and is called Dressing the Tudors: A Social History of 16th Century Dress and you can get more info or request a brochure by emailing ce-enquiries@nottingham.ac.uk | | Tuesday, November 28th, 2006 | | 9:50 am |
Busy busy
I am managing quite well to get on with things now, though I haven't managed to be at my studio very much. My non-baby time at the moment is mainly taken up with preparing new patterns for selling at the talks and on the Tudor Tailor website. I am just finishing Posh Henrician for men and women and also children's patterns. They should be up by the New Year. There are some other new things on the website too, take a look if you fancy, http://www.tudortailor.com there's news from the last bunch of talks we did and some new Christmassy stuff on the sales page. Minnie has been to a couple of the talks where she was suitably coo-ed over, still haven't made her any costume yet, though maybe finding out the year at Kentwell in a couple of weeks will inspire me to get going! | | Monday, October 30th, 2006 | | 4:16 pm |
Back in touch
Hello outside world! It's a strange place here in babyland and time takes on a different dimension... I'm feeling like I'm about to emerge out of the first intensive baby and home focused stage as on Wednesday I give the first Tudor Tailor talk since Minnie was born. Michael is going to come and look after her for that one, then I have another four talks/lectures to give this month, all with different babysitters helping out. It's a bit daunting but by the end of the month I should have a feel for what arrangements work best. Good news on the Tudor Tailor front in that the publishers have set a second re-print in motion, and the US publishers want to do the same, very gratifying when it has only been out for 8 monthes. The publishers are also very keen on sorting out the next book, which is good and gives me the kick up the backside I need to start getting stuck in - baby permitting of course... | | Tuesday, September 26th, 2006 | | 3:31 pm |
Minnie Perry
Hello everyone, a quick post from Babyland! Minnie Mikhaila Perry was born on Sunday 10th September, weighing in at 6lb 11oz. Both of us are happy, healthy and doing well. As soon as I have completed her first C17th set of clothes I'll be sure to post them up here, meanwhile here she is being measured up... http://www.ninyamikhaila.com/minnie.html Current Mood: happy | | Monday, August 14th, 2006 | | 3:15 pm |
Hello!
Long time no Live Journal! I've been out and about with The Tudor Tailor Talks (only 9 more to go before the baby gets here, at least I hope she waits 'til then) and avoiding the incredible heat in my studio, which is on the top floor of a C19th mill building with no insulation. One thing I am so happy about is that I finally finished and delivered the two entirely handsewn 1620s suits for Perth museum - pictures here http://www.ninyamikhaila.com/perth.html It was just one of those never ending projects, but I'm pleased with the end results and it certainly deepened my understanding of C17th construction and inspired me to get on with writing the Stuart tailor....! Reconstructing History Patterns
There has been much debate over recent days on the production of Tudor patterns by Kass McGann of Reconstructiong History. Ninya and Jane would like to thank Live Journal freinds for their concerns and clarify the situation. Kass contacted Ninya and Jane earlier in the year to inform them of her intention to produce early Tudor patterns. Knowing that the publication of the Tudor Tailor was imminent she acknowledged that she was likely to be heavily influenced by its content and invited the authors to collaborate on and share in the profits from these patterns. Since Ninya and Jane were intending to produce their own range of patterns they declined to be directly involved or officially endorse Kass's versions but simply requested that she acknowledge the Tudor Tailor with an appropriate credit. Kass McGann's patterns cite the book as a source and credit the authors in the acknowledgements. The Tudor Tailor produces and sells patterns which compete in the marketplace with other similar products. It is the customers' choice which patterns they buy and, given the dearth of resource material available, maybe s/he will buy both! Ninya and Jane are currently developing the range of full-size patterns available from The Tudor Tailor website to include both larger sizes and a wider selection of styles. They would like to take this opportunity to invite people to view the announcement on the website ( http://www.tudortailor.com) and give feedback on which patterns would be of most interest to help in deciding which ones to produce first. | | Monday, June 5th, 2006 | | 7:56 pm |
A spangling I will go...
After counting them all, Michael has kindly informed me that I have sewn 2500 spangles onto Edmund's 1578 suit over the last three days, It looks very twinkly. | | Wednesday, May 17th, 2006 | | 11:51 am |
It's a girl!
I know, you normally announce these things after the baby is born, but we found out yesterday. We had one of those incredible 3d scans which was pretty amazing. She wouldn't really show us her face though and had her hands up in front like she was playing peek-a-boo, the one glimpse we got she looked like a cross pixie, I don't think she appreciated being prodded and poked. Anyway that helps out on the naming front as we couldn't think of any boy's names. She is affectionately referred to as Minnie Perry (Michael's figures company is called Perry Miniatures) and it might just stick.. Current Mood: happy | | Saturday, May 13th, 2006 | | 9:39 pm |
Nearly there
The first intensive week of the Tudor Tailor Talks is nearly at an end. Jane and I have given talks every day for the last 5 days (sometimes 2 in a day) and they have all gone very well. However having left the house at 5.30 this morning in order to be on Radio London at 7.40am followed by a day at the V&A we are both feeling pretty shattered now. The V&A presentations were very satisfying though, and we are looking forward to our second bout there tomorrow afternoon (we are also looking forward to returning to the delicious French patisserie opposite South Kensington tube before we start...) My baby bump seems to have grown since the beginning of the week - despite the repeated lacings into bodies, though that could be all the cake. Current Mood: tired |
